Last 24 Hours in Boulder

Our last day at our house on Fairway Court was a long one. It seemed the list of things to do was never-ending, even though the movers had finished, the car was gone, the cleaning crew had left. Poor E.J. had a bad cold and spent most of this day crying and whining. We had a steady stream of visitors- Cyndi W. came by with lunch from Snarf's (tears upon departure), Tracy and the boys and puppy hung around helping with many jobs (tears upon departure), Rebecca, Riley and Kyler stopped over with a card for Madison, Margaret and her 4 kids dropped in with presents for the kids for the airplane. The kids had fun running through the house doing cartwheels in all the empty space and made one last trip to the park with our babysitter (and my assistant) Sam.

Madison had a few hours of "alone-time" with best-buddy Sammie, while Emerson and I borrowed Bob and Paula's car (more neighbors) to make a delivery of our stuff to the Vaccaro's house, where we would be having a last sleep-over.

David, Jennifer, Sammie and Jacey came over to say a dreaded goodbye (more tears, which Sammie thought was comical), and then a drive with Patrick and David and about 1000 lbs. of luggage to the Vaccaro's to finally relax. At this point E.J. was at his wit's end, but after a home cooked meal from Cambria and a bath with Hailey, he was a new boy. Patrick stayed for dinner and we enjoyed some deck-time with Cam and Craig, another wonderful meal and some much-needed wine. We got a good sleep, and started the next morning on our final errands and goodbyes. It was beginning to feel like a marathon.

Now borrowing Cambria's car, I took Madison, E.J. and Hannah for a last breakfast at Marie's and a couple of errands, then a last stop on Fairway Ct. to say goodbye to Bob and Paula, and Nikki (another neighbor), who gave us an adorable baby Pine tree from her yard to take with us. We named it "Piney" and it's with us in Maryland now, awaiting a new yard to live in. More tears after hearing such nice words from our neighbors, and a final walk-thru of our house with the kids to say goodbye to each room.

It's hard to leave a house that holds so many memories, good and bad. I remember being 8 months pregnant with Madison on 9/11, getting the phone call early in the morning from Glenn, and then watching the coverage on TV all day with an aching back and swollen ankles. I remember bringing her home from the hospital, to her yellow and white room with the blue sky and clouds her daddy painted on her ceiling. And her pink clubhouse, where she spent so much time with her friends. Both of my children learned to stand, crawl and walk on those wood floors.

It's even harder to leave the col-de-sac. That great big driveway we shared with Patrick (the most patient neighbor who let our kids setup camp on his front stoop, peruse his immaculate garage, and would give them a "spin" whenever they asked), those smooth sidewalks and that quiet street were our haven. Madison and Emerson learned to ride their bikes there, and grew up being comfortable and safe enough to walk to our neighbors houses to borrow some milk, deliver some banana bread, or just say hello. The walks to the park with Sammie and Jacey, the sleepovers, the many play dates and babysitters and nannies and snow storms and rainbows and projects and birthday parties and trampoline sessions. Our children led a great life on Fairway Court and we miss our neighborhood so much (well, except for the raccoons).

Thank you to Cambria for taking us to the airport and helping me with all the luggage. Thank you to all of our friends in Boulder for your love, help and support!

Liz and Patrick. Finally done moving, ready for a shower and some food.

E.J. and Hailey. Amazing what a bath can do.

My Jetta Says Goodbye to Boulder

Jim's new employer thankfully arranged for our car to be moved across country, so we didn't have to drive it. Another exciting moment for the kids was watching our car get loaded onto the flat-bed tow truck. We were hoping the actual car carrier would come to our house, but apparently that happens somewhere else.

Goodbye Fairway Court- wish me luck in the big city.

Packing

As part of Jim's relocation package with UA, they arranged for a moving company to pack our stuff and move it across the country. These guys spent two really long days with us at our house, and the kids had a lot of fun with them. They were pros. I watched them use about 5 sheets of paper to wrap each glass, plate, etc. I can't imagine what we will do with all that paper when we unpack. I hope they recycle in Maryland.

For E.J. it was a real thrill to have an actual 18-wheeler tractor trailer in front of our house. He got to go inside the cab, where there are bunk beds for the men to sleep in, beep the horn, and have free reign to climb up and down the ramp into the truck. Madison and Hannah had equally as much fun, and we all had ice cream from the Ice Cream Truck together.

After all was said and done, we had 422 items/boxes inventoried into a computer and loaded into the truck, including 1 motor scooter, 2 surfboards, 5 bikes, 23 boxes of toys, and about 900 pieces of kids artwork that I couldn't throw away. Our stuff is now in storage somewhere in Maryland waiting for us, and hopefully safe.

A dream-come-true for Emerson- a Big Rig at our house!

E.J. and the movers, who were so patient with him being underfoot while they worked!

Exhausted, but no place to rest except on a blanket I found in the car, and mommy's yoga mat.

This is the only dog that ever entered our house on Fairway Court! We figured why not, since Jim wasn't there and we were hours away from moving.

Going Away Party at the Vaccaro's

Our dear friends, Cambria, Craig, Hannah and Hailey, hosted a great party for us at their house in Lafayette the weekend before we moved. Jim came back to Boulder to attend, and we had a nice visit with so many friends from near and far, and lots of delicious food.

Thank you so much, Cam and Craig, for your generosity and friendship! And thanks for taking these great pictures,  since my camera was broken.

Madison's Piano Recital

Our long-time babysitter and friend, Angelie, is also a voice and piano teacher. Madison started piano lessons with her about 6 weeks or so before we moved, and since we would be missing the formal recital with Angelie's other students, we had a small one at her house for friends Sammie, Jacey, Andrew and Zach, and Angelie's daughter, Petra. Emerson also took a couple of lessons with Angelie, and he played for the group, too.

Cheynna's Baby Shower

My friend Tracy J. and I had a little baby shower for Cheynna in June when she visited Boulder. She and Rory are moving back to Boulder this fall (after the baby is born), and I am still in shock that we won't be there to welcome them. But at least they'll have another reason to visit the East Coast now that we're in Maryland. And according to Rory's Twitters, he really LOVES the East Coast of the USA. Now if we can just work on Madison and E.J. to say it's OK for them to bring the baby, we'll be all set.

These photos are at Tracy J.'s gorgeous home.

Liz and Rebecca displaying the candles we made. Tracy J. had us each decorate a 7-day candle with ribbon, each person giving Cheynna a piece of our ribbon to add to her candle, so that hers was made up of a piece of each of ours. When she goes into labor, we will all be notified via a phone call chain to light our candles and keep them lit until the baby is born safely.

Cheynna requested some of Madison and E.J.'s artwork for the baby's room, and these are the items we chose to copy and frame for baby Treto-Sutherland.

Graduation from Daisys to Brownies

Madison had a great first year with the Girl Scouts in Boulder, and we hope to find a nice troop here in Maryland for her to join. Her leaders, Margaret and Jennifer, did a wonderful job with the Daisy Troop, and these photos are from their graduation ceremony in the lovely organic garden at Creekside Elementary School.
